A 6.9 earthquake has struck the central Philippine island of Negros and set off landslides. The quake was centered 72km north of Dumaguete city on Negros and hit at a depth of 46km. The area is about 650km southeast of the capital, Manila.

A 6.3 magnitude earthquake has struck 15km southeast of the city of Ica and 280km south-southeast of Lima, Peru yesterday. There are no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

It is being reported that a magnitude 5.8 quake struck Christchurch at 1.58pm this afternoon. Centred 20km north east of Lyttelton and 8km deep it was followed by a second sharp jolt a few minutes later. Several aftershocks have also been recorded.

Qantas has grounded all domestic and international flights until further notice. This is in response to industrial action by three unions - the Australian Licenced Aircraft Engineers Association (ALAEA), the Australian International Pilots Association (AIPA) and the Transport Workers Union (TWU).

The Transport Workers Union has advised Qantas that up to 3,800 baggage handlers, ground staff, catering, freight and other transport employees will go on strike for four hours from 5am on Tuesday 20 September, and has also imposed bans that could affect flights for a 48-hour period.

Irene, a category 3 hurricane, struck the low-lying Bahamas southeast of Florida today (NZ time) and is expected to head northward to the North Carolina coast on Saturday.

The most powerful earthquake to strike the East Coast of the US in 67 years struck early today (NZ time).
The US Geological Survey said the quake registered magnitude 5.8 and was centred 70 kilometres northwest of Richmond, Virginia at a depth of 6km and was felt from South Carolina to Maine.

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake was reported in Christchurch just after 1pm today.
It struck 10 kilometres east of Christchurch at Taylor's Mistake beach, at a depth of 11km. It was followed by another aftershock about nine minutes later.
